Q: Why should I purchase the Alumni Travel Protect Plan?

A: You’ve saved, you’ve waited, and now you’re all set to go on the trip of your life. Preparing for your trip includes protecting yourself from unfortunate occurrences that threaten to interfere with even your best-laid plans. By purchasing an Alumni Travel Protect Plan, you can help reimburse yourself for cancellation penalties, medical costs, baggage loss and delays, as well as gain access to a wide range of traveler’s assistance services.

Did you know that an Alumni Travel Protect Plan could protect your travel investment if:

  • You become ill and can’t travel
  • Someone in your immediate family (as defined in the plan) has an illness or injury, even if they aren’t scheduled to travel with you
  • Your child comes down with an illness and is unable to travel
  • You have to cancel because your house becomes flooded due to a hurricane
  • A family member back home passes away and you must return from your trip early
  • Your luggage is lost by the airlines
  • You get sick or injured on your adventure and have to consult a doctor while traveling

^ back to questions

Q: What does it cover?

A: The Alumni Travel Protect Plans include pre-trip cancellation and post-departure benefits, including the following:

Trip Cancellation
If you must cancel your adventure for a specified reason, the Alumni Travel Protect Plans provide reimbursement up to your TOTAL TRIP COST.

Eligible reasons include illness, injury or death to you, a traveling companion or an immediate family member. Additional reasons for cancellation include jury duty, subpoena, having a home made uninhabitable by a natural disaster, hijacking and being involved in a documented traffic accident en route to departure.

Trip Interruption
If you must interrupt your adventure for a specified reason, the Alumni Travel Protect Plans provide reimbursement for your prepaid unused non-refundable expenses up to 200% of trip cost depending on the plan purchased.

Trip Delay
If you should miss the departure of your vacation due to carrier-caused delays or other eligible reasons, the plan reimburses you for additional accommodations, meals and "catch up" transportation expenses.

Medical Protection, Emergency Medical Evacuations and Repatriations
If you become ill or are injured while on your trip, the Alumni Travel Protect Plans may reimburse for out-of-pocket medical expenses incurred while traveling, including physicians, laboratory and therapeutic services, prescriptions, and emergency medical transport to the nearest appropriate medical facility.

Medical coverage while traveling overseas may be particularly important as Medicare and certain HMOs may not cover medical expenses incurred outside the U.S.

Baggage Protection and Baggage Delay Coverage
Reimbursement for covered loss, damage, or theft of baggage and/or personal effects during or while in transit to or from your adventure, as well as reimbursing you for the purchase of necessary items in the event your luggage is delayed by a common carrier for 12+ hours en route to your trip.

24-Hour Worldwide Emergency Assistance
24-hour emergency assistance hotline for medical and travel-related problems, emergencies ranging from cash transfer, legal, dental, or medical referrals, assistance with replacement of lost travel documents, as well as medical consultation and monitoring.

Please refer to the Alumni Travel Protect Plan for details, including plan-specific terms, conditions, exclusions and coverage limits.

^ back to questions

Q: Will my current home, renters, credit card, or health insurance policies cover my trip?

A: Due to territory restrictions, many other insurance policies may not offer any coverage while you travel. Other policies may offer partial protection; however, due to benefit limits, co-insurance and deductibles, you may not be reimbursed for the full amount incurred. Some people do not have any insurance coverage that covers the cost of their vacation if they must cancel their trip. The Alumni Travel Protect Plans contain travel benefits that credit card, homeowners and renters insurance policies may not offer. The medical coverage included in the Alumni Travel Protect Plans is absolutely vital for people whose health insurance policies (Medicare, certain HMOs, etc.) may not pay for medical expenses incurred outside of the United States or may not cover transportation charges due to medical emergencies.

^ back to questions

Q: Is there help while I'm traveling?

A: One of the valued benefits offered in the Alumni Travel Protect Plans is the 24-Hour Worldwide Emergency Assistance Service. With On Call International you have 24-hour access to a highly trained, multilingual staff to assist you with emergencies such as cash transfers, lost documents, and medical or legal referrals. On Call will also coordinate any medically necessary emergency medical evacuations, including air ambulance transportation, hospitalizations, medical case management and monitoring.

^ back to questions

Q: I have a pre-existing medical condition. Why should I buy the plan?

A: Even if you have a medical condition that you might consider pre-existing, you should still consider purchasing an Alumni Travel Protect Plan, as some medical conditions would not be considered pre-existing under the terms of the policy. The policy only excludes those medical conditions that manifest, became acute, exhibited symptoms or required medication within 60 days of your purchase of the plan. The pre-existing condition exclusion is not applied to emergency medical evacuations or repatriations.

A: No. There is no reimbursement for trip cancellation due to weather predictions. However, the plan does provide trip cancellation reimbursement if weather causes a complete cessation of all common carrier services for 24+ hours or if a natural disaster at your destination causes your accommodations to be rendered uninhabitable. The plan also includes travel delay coverage if weather causes your delay for 12+ hours.
